Wins and championships clinched at VIR

Muscle Milk Pickett Racing may have had troubled weekends in Road America and Baltimore but the Klaus Graf and Lucas Luhr combo put their championship assault back on track at VIR with a dominant victory today.

After escaping a turn 1 opening lap challenge, the German pair were unchallenged throughout the four hour journey to take a 3 lap victory over the No.16 Dyson Racing Lola of Chris Dyson, Guy Smith and Johnny Mowlem.

In the P2 class it looked for a while like Level 5 Motorsport and Conquest Racing were trying to win the race to the penalty box – both teams penalized throughout the race and spending time in racing’s equivalent of hockey’s “sin bin”.

Level 5’s Scott Tucker and Christophe Bouchut took the victory, but the P2 championship is going down to the wire at next month’s Petit Le Mans.

Corvette Racing had a banner day by clinching the drivers, team and manufacturers championships. Oliver Gavin took his fourth ALMS driver’s championship while seven years after making his sportscar debut at his home track here in Virginia, Tommy Milner took his first sportscar championship.

The victories by Corvette were their first since switching to the hotly contested GT class in 2009.

In the PC category, CORE autosport’s Alex Popow took the driver’s championship today with his third place finish with Tom Kimber-Smith. CORE took the team’s championship recently at Road America while team boss Jon Bennett took his third victory of the year today at VIR with Colin Braun.
