Whelen Cadillac fastest Friday morning in Long Beach
The No. 31 Whelen Engineering Racing Cadillac DPi-V.R set the fastest lap during the two-hour practice session for this weekend’s IMSA BUBBA burger Sports Car Grand Prix of Long Beach.
Felipe Nasr and Pipo Derani share the car. Nasr set the fastest time of 1:12.394 around the 1.968-mile street course. The top six cars in the DPi class all lapped faster than the 2018 pole time.
This morning’s session marked the first time the IMSA Medium compound for DPi ran on a street course, as these courses don’t allow for any private testing.
The Long Beach track constantly evolves over the weekend, and the IMSA cars are essentially some of the world’s fastest “street sweepers” during the practice session.
With other series and other tire brands present, there is a significant change in evolution from morning to afternoon before the second practice at 4:45 p.m. PT.
Qualifying then occurs later in the afternoon, at 6 p.m. PT for DPi.
