WEC goes to Fuji
WEC goes to Fuji
After September’s North American swing, the FIA World Endurance Championship heads to the far east for Japan’s 6 Hours of Fuji.
The No. 2 Porsche 919 Hybrid holds a commanding lead in the standings, with Timo Bernhard, Earl Bamber and Brendon Hartley winning the last four races, including the 24 Hours of Le Mans and the recent North American rounds, and finishing on the podium all six rounds of the championship thus far.
Anthony Davidson returns to WEC action, after missing the round in Mexico City, to re-join teammates Sebastien Buemi and Kazuki Nakajima in the No. 8 Toyota TS050 Hybrid.
Buemi and Nakajima sit second in the standings, with Davidson alone third. Buemi and Nakajima sit at 108 points on the year, a full 51 behind the Porsche trio.
With Toyota winning at Fuji, their home track in the FIA World Endurance Championship, four of the last five years, the team has a legitimate chance to reel in the championship-leading Porsche.
In GTE-Pro, Ford Chip Ganassi Racing’s Andy Priaulx and Harry Tincknell maintained their championship lead in the No. 61 Ford GT despite not finishing on the podium in either North American round of the championship.
The pair won the opening round at Silverstone, but have only one further podium on the season, a second place at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, giving them 102 points.
The reigning 6 Hours of Fuji winners, Priaulx and Ticknell, will be looking to repeat 2016 and return to their winning ways.
Richard Lietz and Fred Makowiecki are second in the standings, just six points behind the Ford guys, in the No. 91 Porsche 911 RSR. The duo is still chasing their first victory of the year, but their points are bolstered by four podium finishes in six races.
Lietz won at Fuji in 2012 for Porsche and Makowiecki in the rain-shortened 2013 race for Aston Martin.
The 6 Hours of Fuji goes green on Sunday, October 15 at 1 AM Eastern on Fox Sports 2 with continuing coverage at 2:30 AM on Fox Sports 1.
