VIR Announces Improvements
Virginia International Raceway is set to complete repaving of the 3.27 mile natural terrain circuit as the starting point for a series of improvements announced today.
In addition to the repaving of the now 13 year old track surface, the track will be widened by six feet in several key areas to provide additional passing opportunities while maintaining the character of the natural terrain circuit.
As part of the paving project the race paddock will also be paved and the start/finish line will be relocated closer to turn one to provide fans a better view
The 1,300 acre facility, which includes a hotel, spa, conference center and skeet shooting, host over 400,000 guests each year.
VIR is a highly diverse facility with over 400 track rental days per year as it can split the circuit to run two tracks simultaneously.
In addition to a growing list of events, track users include; car clubs, racing schools, vehicle manufacturers and technical developers.
The track widening, kerbing and safety improvements are expected to begin later this year, following final approvals from IMSA and FIA.
Track owner and CEO Connie Nyholm reported that pre-sales for this weekend’s ALMS event are up 43 percent from last year’s inaugural event.
