The SRT Motorsports Dodge Viper squad are leaving no stone unturned in its efforts to have a Dodge man win the 2014 GT Le Mans drivers championship in the TUDOR United SportsCar Championship.

cota_race_gal2_14_ 6Kuno Wittmer and Jonathan Bomarito lead the driver’s points by seven with one race remaining. The team have now decided to split the duo for the final race – doubling their chances of having a Viper driver crowned as champion.

It now looks likely that the GT Le Mans class will only have one crowned champion. Corvette Racing’s Antonio Garcia is currently in second place – his teammate Jan Magnussen out of contention after having to miss the VIR race due to a concussion suffered in a practice crash.

Wittmer will now drive with Marc Goosens and Ryan Hunter-Reay while Bomarito will be teamed with Domink Franbacher and Rob Bell.

“What we’ve decided to do is switch the drivers in the Vipers to maximize our championship opportunities,” said Gary Johnson, SRT racing manager.

“This will improve our chances to win the driver’s title. If the No. 93 car ended up being taken out by another team, this would allow the No. 91 driver – in this case, Kuno – to win the championship or vice versa should the 91 have an issue it then gives Jonathan Bomarito the chance to win the championship.

“I think it’s a smart decision. It doubles our chances to win the championship. If we didn’t do that and the No. 93 Viper was taken out of the race, we would look foolish for having not split up the drivers. This puts us in a better position to win the driver’s championship, in addition to fighting for the team and manufacturer titles.”
