Venturi Formula E appoints Susie Wolff as Team Principal
Venturi has named Susie Wolff its new Team Principal. She’ll take the helm of the team as its completes season four and prepares for season five of the ABB FIA Formula E Championship.
Wolff’s role in motorsport has grown beyond her driving career. She raced in DTM for seven seasons with Mercedes-Benz. Additionally, she is the most recent female driver to have participated in a Formula 1 weekend, in Friday practice sessions with the Williams team.
Post-driving, Wolff established the ‘Dare to be Different’ initiative. That is aimed to attract new female talent and participation throughout motorsport.
She’ll work at the team’s Monaco headquarters. In season five, Venturi will learn the new Gen2 Formula E race car, which runs on new MICHELIN Pilot Sport tires. These are lighter and should help increase performance, energy efficiency and safety.
Venturi made a splash earlier this spring when it announced Felipe Massa, who retired from Formula 1 after 2017 with the Williams team, would drive for the team in season five. They’ve now made this announcement as well.
“When I decided to stop as a professional driver in 2015, I knew that I wanted to continue with the challenge of competitive racing, just not behind the wheel,” Wolff said.
“You can’t just switch off your competitive instincts when you stop driving and that determination and desire to achieve still burn brightly inside me. I took time to carefully decide the right direction for that challenge and I have now found the perfect next step, with the opportunity to become both a shareholder and Team Principal of VENTURI Formula E Team.
“I’m really looking forward to working with Gildo (Pastor, Venturi FE CEO), who is rightly recognized as a pioneer in electric automobiles and who saw the potential of the series from the very beginning. He has built a strong team that has earned its place on the Formula E grid and features many talented people who I’m excited to work with.
“Formula E is the perfect environment for this step into team management: it is full of potential, breaking the mould for traditional racing series, and the series is enjoying an exciting phase of expansion at the moment. I can’t wait to begin this next chapter in my racing career and to tackle all of the challenges ahead.”
