Update 1: Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca

September 17, 2011

After 1/4 race distance / 90 minutes at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, Dyson Racing leads the race in the pole-winning Lola Mazda.

However, it has certainly not been a standard “start on pole and run away with it” performance. After only 8 laps, Guy Smith slowed suddenly, dropping from the lead to 4th place.

Butch Leitzinger celebrated his return to the LMP1 class by passing Stefan Mucke for the overall lead with a great move through traffic after 15 laps.

The two Aston Martins had their share of problems. The Muscle Milk entry and the factory car clashed in turn 5 causing Mucke to spin. A further incident on lap 52 at the hairpin earned Luhr a 60-second stop penalty despite conjecture whether the Muscle Milk car actually made contact with Mucke, or whether his spin began of his own accord.

After the opening round of pit stops with Chris Dyson now on board, Dyson Racing had resumed in the lead.

In LMPC, Ricardo Gonzalez headed the pack with a tight battle with championship rival Eric Lux. As the race headed towards the two hour mark, Gonzalez teammate Frankie Montecalvo had moved up to second giving CORE autosport a 1-2.

The BMW boys had held the top spot in the opening part of the race but as the event headed towards the two hour mark, the Risi Competizione Ferrari assumed the lead after a troubled day yesterday when the team had a crash and suffered fuel pressure issues in qualifying.
