Toyota reigns in the Chinese rain
Rain seems to be chasing the FIA World Endurance Championship this year with Friday’s second practice session in Shanghai interrupted by a torrential downpour.
Toyota topped both sessions at the home of the Chinese Formula 1 Grand Prix. The opening 90-minute session, started wet but the second session was red flagged early after heavy rain confined all teams to the pits.
The rain follows the red flag during the Austin round of the FIA WEC after a mid-race downpour. The 2013 Fuji race was actually a total wash-out – only 16 laps being completed under the safety car. Luckily for Japanese fans this year, the rain did not disrupt race day.
The Antony Davidson/Sebastien Beumi Toyota topped both sessions today ahead of the sister car of Alex Wurz, Stephane Sarrazin and Kaz Nakajima.
Audi Sport were second and third in both sessions ahead of the pair of Porsche prototype entries.
“It has been a difficult day in terms of weather but in all conditions that we faced, the car performed well,” Anthony Davidson said.
“I’m happy with the balance of the car in the dry and wet conditions and the performance seems to be there. We have a bit of homework to do tonight as usual on a Friday. I hope we get better weather tomorrow but I think we will have to wait until Sunday to get a dry day.”
The Nissan-powered G-Drive Racing entry was fastest in LM P2 in both sessions ahead of the ESM Honda of Scott Sharp, Ryan Dalziel and Ricardo Gonzalez.
GTE-Pro honors were spread between Aston Martin and Ferrari.
Saturday’s on-track activity includes the hour-long practice session starting at 9:30 a.m. China Standard Time (9:30 p.m. ET). LMP2 qualifying begins at 1:55 p.m. China Standard Time on Saturday afternoon. (1:55 a.m. ET) Green flag for the 6 Hours of Shanghai takes place Sunday at 11 a.m. China Standard Time (11 p.m. ET).
