wednesday_lm24_practice_5Rain created history at the 24 Hours of Le Mans today with the race starting under safety car for the first time.

Hollywood star Brad Pitt waved the green and the 60 car field quiet moved off the grid to begin a 52 minute journey behind the safety car.

lm24_16_race_gal2_11Some teams called into question the length of the slow running, some even pitting to switch to intermediate tires.

The first team to strike trouble was the No.67 Ford GT of Mario Franchitti, Harry Tincknell and Andy Priaulx which suffered an early gearbox issue.

The remaining Ford’s continued to enjoy a trouble-free charge at the front with the pole winning car of Dirk Mueller, Joey Hand and Sebastien Bourdais leading the pack.

Risi Competizione’s Ferrari comeback continued to be impressive with the US team actually holding the class lead at the six-hour race distance.

In the Prototype ranks Toyota’s quiet and unassuming pace continued to push them to the front with the Japanese marque holding first and third place at the fix hour mark with Stephane Sarazin, Mike Conway and Kamui Kobayashi leading.

Mark Webber’s Porsche held the lead for four hours but had lost after the seventh round of stops.

Other class leaders included the No.46 Thiriet By Tds Racing Oreca in LMP2 and the Abu Dhabi-Proton Racing Porsche in GTE-Am which includes Patrick Long on its driving squad.
