Tommy talks tire tech in Detroit

tommy_detroitCorvette Racing’s Tommy Milner joined Michelin executives at the North American International Auto Show to talk about technology transfer and how Michelin engineers their innovations from the track to the street.

roar_saturday_gal_22Speaking from a display featuring a Corvette C7-R and a limited edition street version on the Z06, Milner noted how when he joined Corvette Racing in 2011 that he knew that it was  a Michelin “technical partner” team, but didn’t fully know what that meant until he began to race with Michelin.

After winning the GTE-Pro class at Le Mans in 2011 with Antonio Garcia and Olivier Beretta, Milner teamed with Oliver Gavin to win the 2012 ALMS GT championship.

He noted that the launch of the C7 Corvette gave him a deeper understanding of the Michelin technology transfer.

Michelin embeds an engineer with the team at every test, every practice and every race, and that their senior Michelin race engineer also led the development of tires for all of the Corvette C7 models, including the Z06. “You can’t have a shorter feedback loop than that,” said Milner.

Milner recounted Corvette Racing’s 2015 triple crown session which produced class wins at the Rolex 24 At Daytona and the Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring for Garcia, Jan Magnussen and Ryan Briscoe, and at Le Mans for himself, Gavin and Jordan Taylor.
