Taylor repeats as Prototype pole winner

July 11, 2015

Quali Corvette10Ricky Taylor became the first repeat Prototype pole winner of the season in the TUDOR Championship today at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park. The second-generation racer will start the No. 10 Konica Minolta Corvette DP at the front of the grid in Sunday’s Mobil 1 SportsCar Grand Prix. He previously won the pole at the Grand Prix of Long Beach.

Taylor’s 1:09.705 lap on the 2.459-mile, 10-turn circuit edged championship rival Christian Fittipaldi in the No. 5 Action Express Racing Corvette DP by .159 seconds. Scott Pruett will start third in the No. 01 Ganassi Racing Ford EcoBoost Riley DP, while points leader Michael Valiante qualified the No. 90 VisitFlorida.com Racing Corvette DP in the fourth spot.

“I wanted to be the first repeat pole winner, especially after coming off a bad weekend in Watkins Glen,” Taylor said. “We wanted to rebound as strongly as we could. Our car has been strong all weekend, especially in race trim.”

Taylor put down his pole-winning time seven minutes into the 15-minute session, then had to watch as his rivals tried to knock him off the top spot.

“Actually I didn’t think it was a very good lap,” Taylor confided. “I got boxed in a couple of times and then I messed up the last corner on my best run. It was stressful, but I’m very happy.”

Quali Oreca38James French won his second consecutive pole in the Prototype Challenge class. Chris Cumming had set the fastest lap seven times in the session in the No. 11 RSR Racing ORECA FLM09 only to see the 23-year-old French snatch the pole in the final minute with his No. 38 Performance Tech Motorsports ORECA FLM09.

“It came down to thousandths of a second again,” said French, who previously won the pole at Detroit’s Belle Isle Park. “I would call it luck more than anything. It was a matter of finding some clean track and putting it together.

“I didn’t have much time,” he recalled. “This track is really intimidating with all of the high-speed corners. I knew what the car was capable of, so it was a matter of trusting the car and trusting the engineer that everything was going to be all right.”

Sunday’s Mobil 1 SportsCar Grand Prix will be broadcast live on FOX Sports 1, beginning at noon ET.
