Tales of yellow flags, bash and crash
BMW bounced back for its second ALMS victory of the season and its first since Sebring after Bill Auberlen and Joerg Mueller triumphed at Road America today.
In a day filled with yellow flags, contact and drama – both Corvette and Porsche looked like they were set to continue their recent winning ways, but full-course yellow with about an hour to go gave BMW advantage and track position.
Both BMWs, the ESM Ferrari of Johannes van Overbeek and the No.48 Porsche of Bryce Miller had pitted just before the yellow and were able to jump ahead of the Flying Lizard Porsche of Patrick Long and the Corvettes of Oliver Gavin and Jan Magnussen.
The yellow flag was caused by a crash by the No.17 Porsche of Bryan Sellars – the incident not providing him with the 30th birthday present he was looking for tomorrow.
The last hour subsequently included more yellow flags and multiple incidents of contact.
While Auberlen and Mueller were able to hold on for the win, teammates Dirk Mueller and Jonathan Summerton suffered contact with the Corvette of Gavin and slid down the order.
This came after Magnussen had also banged wheels with the No.56 BMW – finding a way past but also allowing the Porsche of Long through to second place.
Johannes van Overbeek and Magnussen also had contact at the final turn – Magnussen being spun out of third place within sight of the checkered flag.
