Taking it to a new level

September 2, 2012

Level 5 Motorsports took their second 2012 overall ALMS victory on the streets of Baltimore yesterday with the team also earning it’s first 1-2 finish.

Scott Tucker and regular teammate Christophe Bouchut took the win, leading home their Mexican teammates, Lusi Diaz and Ricardo Gonzalez.

The two Level 5 cars led three times for 32 of the 67 laps. Tucker, Bouchut and Joao Barbosa were the highest-finishing ALMS drivers at Sebring in a combined event with the FIA World Endurance Championship.

Prior to that, the last P2 team to win overall was Andretti Green Racing at the 2008 Detroit street race. Saturday’s result gave Level 5 an added boost in the P2 championship it continues to lead.

“I don’t think we tried to win overall. We just wanted to finish,” said Bouchut, who was the P2 pole-sitter. “Now with the overall win, it is fantastic. It is the first time for Level 5 to be 1-2 overall. What can we say? It is a wonderful day.”

Bouchut got around teammate Diaz with a little less than 20 minutes left for the overall and class lead. The two Level 5 cars fought throughout the race with Conquest Endurance’s David Heinemeier-Hansson and Martin Plowman.

Heinemeier-Hansson was the star of the show early in the race, charging into the P2 class lead and also making a forceful move past the P1 prototype of Chris Dyson.

Unfortunately for the Dane, he was penalized for what was deemed to be “avoidable contact” by race officials – a decision which certainly opened fierce debate amongst fans and in the media center.

The Conquest Racing young gun was forced to make a stop, plus one minute penalty. Teammate Martin Plowman was on a similar charge towards the end of the race but eventually was forced into retirement after suffering suspension damage.
