Stepping Up-ESM Breaks Out in 2012
Extreme Speed Motorsports came into its own in its third season of ALMS GT competition.
Scott Sharp’s Stuart, Florida-based team was quick all season long and posted its first poles, first race wins and earned a total of six podiums as the ESM team made its final steps up the rugged GT grid.
A new, iron willed mindset combined with the pair of fast and well prepared Patrón sponsored Ferrari F458 Italias, driven by Johannes van Overbeek and Scott Sharp, was a winning combination that saw them finish second in the GT driver championship.
Following a muted first victory at Canadian Tire Mosport Park, JVO notched the team’s first pole at VIR.
Ferrari shoe Toni Vilander proved to be the ideal complement to Sharp and JVO in helping the team claim its second pole and play a perfect combination of speed and pit strategy in winning Petit Le Mans.
Worthy of special note was the contribution of team driver Guy Cosmo.
Cosmo consistently put the #02 Ferrari into the mix at the front and often led the GT board. Team sponsor and #02 co-driver Ed Brown showed continued improvement as the team’s performance rose in 2012.
ESM has already announced that van Overbeek and Cosmo will return in 2013 with Sharp and Brown as the team once again takes the fight to the world’s top factories and independents.
