Starworks duo star in Road America GRAND-AM
Ex-F1 protege Brendon Hartley pulled off his first GRAND-AM Rolex Series win today at the Road America “double header” when he teamed with Wisconsin driver Scott Mayer to take victory for Starworks Motorsport.
“This was an emotional win for me,” Hartley said. “I’m not going to lie – I had a lot of flashbacks to COTA. But I knew we had it covered, so I just brought it home.”
A late race mistake at the Circuit of the Americas ruined the young New Zealanders chance of success earlier this year.
The win was the second in succession for Starworks Motorsport who also won at Indianapolis with Ryan Dalziel and Alex Popow.
Young Atlanta driver Dane Cameron dominated the event with co-driver Wayne Nonnamaker in the Team Sahlen’s BMW Riley until he suffered a broken axle while leading on lap 54.
“Double duty” BMW driver Bill Auberlen triumphed in the GRAND-AM GT class when passed Patrick Long’s Porsche late in the race to take the win.
ALMS regular Andy Lally finished fifth with John Potter to extend their championship lead.
ALMS PC class driver Tristan Nunez took his third GX class victory for Mazda alongside Joel Miller.
