Son of a gun – double titles for Magnussen family?

October 19, 2013

ZM2N2998While Jan Magnussen closes in on the ALMS GT championship for Corvette Racing with Antonio Garcia this weekend, across the Atlantic in Barcelona, his son Kevin is also on the verge of title success.

_RD41535The Danish/Spanish Corvette Racing combo enters this weekend with a 16 point lead in the championship. To clinch the title, they need to finish seventh or better. Last year the duo – teamed with Jordan Taylor – finished second in the season-closing event.

In the Formula Renault 3.5 championship in Barcelona, Magnussen Jr just needs to score a total of eight points this weekend to put the championship beyond doubt.

ZM2N4079If the Danish ace’s chief rival Stoffel Vandoorne wins the first race on Saturday, Magnussen needs only to finish sixth or better to take the title.

Magnussen needs a total of eight points over the two races – a pair of eighth place finishes would be enough to claim the crown.

He currently leads the championship by 43 points. If he has a lead of more than 25 points after Saturday’s first race, Magnussen will be crowned champion.

The second generation racer enters this weekend on a hot form streak.

At the previous round of the championship at Paul Ricard, the McLaren Young Driver Development Program member topped the timesheets in both testing sessions, scored both poles and was first across the line in both races.

Only a technical issue after the Saturday race spoilt a perfect weekend. Magnussen lost his points from the Saturday win – pushing the championship chase into the final weekend.

“Winning the last ALMS GT title would be fantastic. That would be a special one to have won and hopefully that’s what we can do on Saturday,” Magnussen said.

“But it’s still far from over. There’s a whole Petit Le Mans between us and the championship at the moment.

“To come away with the championship would be absolutely fantastic. Who knows, hopefully the race on Saturday evolves in a way where we can race for the win in the category.”

“Kevin also has a chance to be a champion on Saturday. If it doesn’t happen for him then, he’ll have another chance on Sunday

“It could mean that the both of us would win championships on Saturday, which would be absolutely fantastic. If it does happen, it could be very, very special.”
