Risi rules Saturday practice at VIR
They may have just returned to IMSA WeatherTech Sports Car competition, but Risi Competizione is flexing their muscle at this weekend’s Michelin GT Challenge at VIR.
Toni Vilander powered the Ferrari 488 GTE to a time of 1:40.855, making Risi Ferrari the only car to dip into the 1:40s around VIRginia International Raceway’s 3.27-mile course.
Second place in the session went to Dirk Mueller in the No. 66 Ford GT. Despite the fact that they have yet to lead a session this weekend, the Fords have been quick around VIR.
Third fastest was John Edwards in the No. 24 BMW M6 GTLM. Followed by the Ford and BMW sister No. 67 and No. 25 cars respectively.
Corvette, which led both of Friday’s practices, came sixth and seventh, with Jan Magnussen in the No. 3 just out-pacing Tommy Milner in the No. 4.
Porsche spent the Saturday morning session, as well as Friday’s afternoon practice in eighth and ninth. But, as ever with Porsche, it is impossible to write them off going into this afternoon’s qualifying.
With all nine cars separated by just 1.659 seconds in third practice, the biggest gap of the three sessions, pole could yet go to any of the five manufacturers in the IMSA GTLM class.
