Ready to race in the rain
The morning warm-up is run and done and now teams face a long day ahead at Petit Le Mans with damp weather the order of the day.
Nick Tandy may have been sent to the back of the grid for a ride height infringement on his No.911 Porsche yesterday but the British Le Mans winner was on the pace this morning – leading the overall times.
Mike Rockenfeller was second fastest for the VisitFlorida.com squad but six of the top nine were GTLM cars this morning and the GTD car of Alex Riberas was 10th.
Problems struck a number of teams including Chip Ganassi Racing (alternator issue) while Michael Shank Racing’s already worn out crew now face more repairs after Oz Negri spun and damaged the recently repaired Ligier.
Alex Popow also damaged the No.88 PC car with a spin this morning.
Many crew members in Porsche uniforms are a little sleepy with both the No.911 and No.912 crews facing long overnight repairs while the Falken Porsche crew didn’t finish until 5:00am.
Rain continues to fall at Road Atlanta with heavier showers expected at 3:00pm this afternoon. The pace of the GTLM cars in the wet conditions may cause an issue for the Prototype machines.
However, under yellow flag conditions, the IMSA rulebook states that Prototype and PC machines get to pit first – followed a lap later by GTLM. Even if a GTLM car was able to make it through to the lead, they would be at a disadvantage on every yellow flag pit stop.
Teams will continue to keep an eye on the weather radar throughout the day – we’re looking at either showers, rain or thunderstorms for most of the day.
