Racing toward Sunset
May 12, 2012
Official sunset will arrive here at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca at 8:05pm or about 30 minutes after the checkered flag at today’s race, but teams won’t be waiting any longer to make their moves.
With just over two hours remaining in today’s six-hour race, teams are already working backwards from the race end as they plan for what could be the next to last round of pit stops in the next few minutes.
The track temperature has dropped 15 degrees in less than one hour according to Karl Koenigstein, Michelin ALMS technical team leader. The latest track temperature report is at 82 degrees and dropping. That suggests a switch to soft tires could be in the works as teams make what could be critical pit stops with two hours to go.
