Rebellion Racing topped the timesheets for the practice session at Long Beach this morning with ex-Formula 1 ace Nick Heidfeld topping the times.
Heidfeld stopped the clocks at 1:14.708 around the street circuit in his and the Toyota-powered Lola team’s Long Beach debut.
It was fitting for the first time in ALMS history that a Toyota-powered car was fastest in a session at the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach. In one of the longest sponsorships in US motorsport history, Toyota has been backing the California street race for the past 34 years.
The ex-Prost, Sauber, Jordan, Williams, BMW Sauber and Renault Formula 1 driver is making his third ALMS start this weekend.
Muscle Milk Pickett Racing was second fastest this morning with Lucas Luhr fastest in the HPD entry.
Dyson Racing’s session finished early when a fire in the car brought out the red flag with Guy Smith at the wheel.
Ryan Briscoe topped the times for Level 5 Motorsport in P2. Level 5 this week committed for a full-season of ALMS competition with Briscoe and Marino Franchitti confirmed to drive with Scott Tucker for the year.
The GT times were headed by Marco Holzer in the Paul Miller Racing Porsche. This was despite an earlier off-course excursion where he failed to make the corner into turn 1 and nudged the tire barrier.
