Q&A: Michelin’s IMSA 2019 preparation, Part 3
Following meetings with manufacturers and team representatives at Daytona, we check in with Chris Baker, director of motorsport, Michelin North America, for a multi-part series outlining Michelin’s preparations for the 2019 IMSA season.
Part three is below, with a look at 2019 tire options and the Michelin IMSA Encore. Parts one (Michelin’s entry) and two (on-track opportunities) are linked here.
Will you develop IMSA specific tires?
“No, not at this time. Our plan is to draw from our global portfolio of tires, which are well developed and proven. We do not currently plan to develop new, IMSA specific tires for 2019.”
How many options do you expect to provide?
“For 2019 WeatherTech Prototype, GTD, and the Michelin Sports Car Challenge we expect to have two tire options available, and, in conjunction with IMSA, we will designate one specific tire prior each event.”
What is the Michelin IMSA Encore?
“The Michelin IMSA Encore is a new Pro-Am event to be held at Sebring, November 9-11. The Pro-Am teams will be the stars of the weekend, with a four hour race. The classes invited include; IPC (LMP3), GTD (GT3), GS (GT4), and TCR. We expect additional details to be announced closer to the upcoming Sebring race weekend.”
