Pruett prevails in final IMSA practice
Scott Pruett gave a boost to his hopes for his first victory of the season in Ganassi Racing’s Ford EcoBoost-powered Riley when he set the pace in the final 60-minute practice session for Saturday’s Lone Star Le Mans. Pruett toured the 3.4-mile COTA road course in 1:57.366 to top the Prototype category.
The No. 01 Ford DP also ran the quickest lap in Friday’s second session with Pruett’s teammate Joey Hand at the wheel. Both Ford drivers were well under the 1:57.809 track record set last year in qualifying by Alex Brundle.
Ozz Negri continued to show his speed in the No. 60 MSR Ligier-Honda on the 20-turn Circuit of the Americas. The Brazilian driver recorded the session’s second quickest time at 1:57.571, just .205 seconds off Pruett’s pace.
A quartet of Corvette drivers trailed Pruett and Negri on the time sheet, with Ricky Taylor, Dane Cameron, Christian Fittipaldi, and Richard Westbrook in third through sixth.
German marques dominated the GT Le Mans category as Porsche and BMW claimed the top five spots. Wolf Henzler ran 2:03.521 in the final minute of the session to put the No. 17 Porsche RSR at the head of the class, followed by Dirk Werner (No. 25 BMW), Earl Bamber (No. 912 Porsche), points leader Patrick Pilet (No. 911 Porsche) and John Edwards (No. 24 BMW). Pierre Kaffer was sixth in the Risi Competizione Ferrari, while Corvette Racing’s twin C7.Rs trailed in seventh and eighth on the time sheet.
In the Prototype Challenge class, Renger van der Zande enjoyed more than half a second advantage in the No. 8 Starworks Motorsports Oreca FLM09 over Colin Braun. Christopher Haase set the pace in GT Daytona with Paul Miller Racing’s Audi R8 LMS.
The TUDOR Championship cars will be back on track at 3:45 p.m. local time for the start of qualifying.
