Prost’s Miami master class
Nicolas Prost has taken over the lead in the FIA Formula E Championship with his stunning victory on the streets of Miami.
Prost came close to victory at the opening round, leading until the final corner when he clashed with Rebellion Racing sportscar teammate Nick Heidfeld.
Today he made no mistake as he held off a hard-charging Scott Speed to win on the streets of Miami – however, he wasn’t sure whether he had taken the win after failing to see the checkered flag at the finish.
“I didn’t know for sure I had won until I got back into the pits as they forgot to show me the checkered flag at the finish. I kept asking my guys ‘is it finished yet’ and kept pushing like crazy,” Prost said.
“It was a really good race. I tried a different strategy today. I saw I was quite fast but I couldn’t pass so I elected to go longer on the stop strategy. It turned out to be quite difficult because I was still on the edge with battery energy and I had to lift on my in lap for the pits.
“Daniel (Abt) and I got back out side by side but I knew he had to do one more lap as I had pitted a lap later. I was trying to save energy and kept thinking at the end I might have a shot. It was really under control and I was only focussing on him and suddenly I saw Scott (Speed) coming fast.
“I think Daniel was running out of energy and I could overtake him but it was really tricky and you had to remain really focussed.”
Prost now enjoys a seven point lead in the championship over previous leader Lucas di Grassi but knows full well there is plenty of racing to come with five weekends and six races remaining.
“I going to take every race one by one. You have to remain focussed in this series. You can hit the wall very easily here so it is not like you can really control things,” Prost said.
“The next race I’ll have the same approach – try to take points every time and after the second race in London we’ll see where we are.”
Prost was joined on the podium by his four-time Formula 1 World Championship-winning father Alain who collected the teams’s trophy for the e.DAMS Renault team.
