Porsche wins as Toyota suffers heartbreak

June 19, 2016

lm24_2016_podium_5In one of the most stunning races in motorsport history, Toyota came within one single lap of becoming only the second manufacturer to claim victory at the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

lm24_2016_podium_3The Toyota TS050 Hybrid stopped on the pit straight just as the Kazuki Nakajima, Anthony Davison and Sebastien Buemi entry was about to start its final lap.

Japanese ace Nakajima was able to get the car going again but his final 12-minute lap was too slow under the regulations and the car was not classified as a finisher despite being second to greet the flag.

The late-race set-back handed the victory to the pole-winning Porsche of Neel Jani, Marc Lieb and Romain Dumas – giving Porsche its second consecutive Le Mans victory.

The Toyota had spent the previous four hours at the head  of the pack before suffering its heartbreaking issue.

Their teammates aboard the No. 6 Toyota – Mike Conway, Stephane Sarrazin and Kamui Kobayashi – took over second place with the No. 8 Audi of Oliver Jarvis, Lucas di Grassi and Loic Duval finishing in third.

In LM P2, the Signatech Alpine of  Gustavo Menezes,  Nicolas Lapierre and  Stéphane Richelmi took the win.

American teams in LM P2 included Michael Shank Racing (ninth), Extreme Speed Motorsport No.30 (11th), Krohn Racing (13th) and ESM No.31 (17th).
