Porsche has triumphed in the FIA World Endurance Championship Lone Star Le Mans event at Circuit of The Americas – Mark Webber, Brendon Hartley and Timo Bernard taking their second victory in a row.
Webber stole the lead with an outside move exiting turn one on the opening lap. However, the trio had to fight back after the team received a stop plus one minute penalty for a pit lane infraction.
“I had a super start, got the braking point for turn one perfectly right and passed Neel,“ Webber said.
“Everything went really well except for my second pit stop. In this very wide pit lane I overshot our garage. When it comes to double stints – Timo is the man. Hats off.”
That put them back behind the sister No.7 machine which was looking set for victory until it suffered an electrical problem with 30 minutes remaining.
Audi took second and third with Andre Lotterer, Benoit Treluyer and Marcel Fassler grabbing the upper hand over Lucas di Grassi, Loic Duval and Oliver Jarvis.
Other class winners included the G-Drive Racing Ligier of Roman Rusinov, Julien Canal and Sam Bird in LM P2, Richard Lietz and Michael Christensen in GTE-Pro and Victor Shaytar, Andrea Bertolini and Aleksey Basov in GTE-Am.
