Porsche has topped the opening practice at the 24 Hours of Le Mans as teams endured changing wet conditions during the four hour session.

The No.2 Porsche of Neel Jani set the pace at 3:22.011 on lap 43 of the 44 laps the Porsche completed. Jani will share the car with regular teammates Romain Dumas and Marc Leib.

Last year’s FIA World Endurance Championship-winning No.1 machine of Mark Webber, Brendon Hartley and Timo Bernhard was second fastest with Hartley setting the time.

The No.8 Audi was third fastest ahead of the two Toyotas and the No.7 Audi.

In LM P2, last year’s race winning KCMG Nissan-powered Oreca was fastest with Brit Richard Bradley at the wheel.

The GTE-Pro battle brought back memories of the 60s with a classic Ford versus Ferrari battle.

Ford set the pace early, holding 1-2-3 at one stage in the session before the No.51 AF Corsa of Gianmaria Bruni, James Calado and Alessandro Pier Guidi jumped to the top.

They were later joined by the Risi Competizione car in the team’s return to Le Mans.

Ford’s only issue was a late session spin for Le Mans rookie Billy Johnson which brought out the yellow flag.

Next up tonight is the first qualifying session form 10:00pm to midnight with teams finally getting the chance to do some dry track running.
