Porsche tops first Bahrain practice
Porsche set the pace in night practice in Bahrain with the No.14 entry of Neel Jani, Romain Dumas and Marc Leib setting the pace in preparation for this weekend’s round of the FIA World Endurance Championship.
Jani recorded a time of 1m43.375s – the only man to break into the 43 second bracket. The times in the evening session under lights were considerably faster than opening afternoon session – Jani’s time at night was more than two seconds faster than the Toyota of championship leaders Anthony Davidson and Sebastien Buemi from the first practice.
The Toyota duo were second fastest in the night session ahead of the second Porsche of Timo Bernhard, Mark Webber and Brendon Hartley.
“In the afternoon we were focussing on long runs and set-up work,” Jani said.
“Step by step we have managed to improve the car. Obviously our car is quite strong on fresh tires, but overall we still have room for improvement. P1 is always nice, but we will only know tomorrow in qualifying what it’s worth.”
G-Drive Racing’s Ligier Nissan topped the P2 times in both sessions with Olivier Pla at the wheel.
In the GTE ranks, Aston Martin was fastest in both sessions. Their GTE Pro car of Darren Turner and Stefan Mucke was fastest in the afternoon session and Nicki Thiim topped the times at night aboard their LMGTE Am entry recorded a lap of 1:58.440.
This was the quickest of the day so far and a full second ahead of the leading Pro car, the No.51 AF Corse Ferrari of GT Championship leading driver Gianmaria Bruni.
A third and final practice session will take place tomorrow at 11.10am (local time) which will give the teams the final chance to complete their set up before qualifying which starts at 5:00pm.
