Porsche Rennsport Reunion VI, Friday notes

September 28, 2018

Heavy fog permeated the first half of Friday activity at Porsche Rennsport Reunion VI.

However, once the marine layer finally dissipated after 1 p.m., there was still plenty of material to come out of the second day of the weekend.

In case you missed Thursday’s notes, they’re linked here. Photos from Rennsport are linked here via the photo feed.

Porsche 919 Hybrid Evo makes first Monterey run

The Porsche 919 Hybrid Evo took to the track under gray skies this morning for its first exhibition laps of the weekend.

Neel Jani was in the car for Porsche’s car-to-car shooting for the first bit of running. The Porsche Team then installed Earl Bamber for the first flying laps. Bamber’s laps were unofficial and not part of a record run attempt.

Michael Christensen meets the 1998 911 GT1-98

In 1998, Porsche won the 24 Hours of Le Mans overall with the Porsche 911 GT1-98. The win kicked off Michelin’s run of 21 consecutive overall wins at the Circuit de la Sarthe.

Michael Christensen took his first Le Mans win this year in a historic car of his own. His No. 92 Porsche 911 RSR was adorned in Porsche’s “pink pig” livery, which graced a 1971 Porsche 917/30. He shared the GTE-Pro class winning entry with Laurens Vanthoor and Kevin Estre. Both of those two are also here at Rennsport this weekend.

Today at the track, Christensen had an opportunity to sit in the 1998 911 GT1-98. This united one of Porsche’s factory drivers to win with the first car that has kicked off Michelin’s current Le Mans win streak.

Christensen and Estre race full-time in that No. 92 car in the FIA World Endurance Championship.

The Michelin activation display is present on the outside of Turn 4, next to the Mother’s Polish bridge and its display. Check out a few shots from the display below.
