Porsche912-02-1400Jorg Bergmeister displayed his mastery of Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca in the second practice session for Sunday’s TUDOR United SportsCar Championship Monterey Grand Prix. The German posted the quickest time in the intensely competitive GT Le Mans category with a 1:23.217 lap in the No. 912 Porsche.

Ferrari62-1400Bergmeister’s advantage was slim, however. Pierre Kaffer was only 0.343 seconds behind in Risi Competizione’s Ferrari 458 Italia. John Edwards was third in Team RLL’s No. 24 BMW Z4 GTE.
Three different manufacturers were represented in the top three positions in GTLM.

Ozz Negri continued to set the pace in Prototype with Michael Shank Racing’s Honda-powered Ligier JS P2. Fastest in the first practice, Negri was more than a second quicker in the second session with a best lap of 1:19.028.

Negri held a razor-thin .008-second margin over Jordan Taylor in the Wayne Taylor Racing Corvette DP. With a pole and a victory in the preceding round in Long Beach, the Taylor team has momentum.

Joey Hand was third quickest in the Prototype class in Ganassi Racing’s Ford EcoBoost Riley. The top three P-cars used three different powerplants: Honda (Negri), Chevrolet (Taylor) and Ford (Hand).

Bruno Junqueira was again the quickest driver in the Prototype Challenge category with RSR Racing’s Oreca FLM09. Patrick Lindsey put Porsche on the point in GT Daytona with Park Place Motorsports’ Porsche 911 GT America.

The final one-hour practice will begin Saturday at 10:50 a.m. local time, with qualifying scheduled to begin at 4:15 p.m. Sunday’s two-hour, 40-minute Monterey Grand Prix will be televised live on Fox Sports 1 at 4:00 p.m. ET.
