Porsche GT Team continued its practice pace at the Mobil 1 SportsCar Grand Prix from 2017. The pair of Porsche 911 RSRs topped both IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship sessions on Friday.
The team has led five of six practice sessions in either 2017 or 2018 at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park with the new Porsche 911 RSR. Dirk Werner scored the car’s first pole this race last year.
Both Earl Bamber and Nick Tandy topped the session-leading times from last year.
Bamber’s teammate Laurens Vanthoor set the pace in both sessions last year at 1:15.151 and 1:14.753.
Today, Bamber went fastest in first practice at 1:14.538 while Tandy lowered the mark to 1:14.357 in second practice. Tandy shares his No. 911 car with Patrick Pilet.
In both sessions today, Corvette Racing was just behind the Porsches with its Corvette C7.Rs.
Meanwhile Ford was fifth and sixth and BMW seventh and eighth in both sessions. This created a “Noah’s Ark” type of order among the four Michelin technical partner teams.
Overall and in Prototype, CORE autosport led today with Colin Braun in the No. 54 Oreca 07 Gibson. He shares that car with Jon Bennett. Braun’s lap time of 1:06.902 in second practice was the day’s fastest time.
Turner Motorsport BMW (morning) and Meyer Shank Racing Acura (afternoon) split the day up top in GT Daytona. Alvaro Parente laid down a 1:16.574 lap in the No. 86 Acura NSX GT3 he shares with Katherine Legge, who is second in that class’ points standings.
Performance Tech Motorsports will withdraw its Oreca after an incident in first practice.
Helio Castroneves also had an incident in second practice in his Penske Acura. That team faces a long night of repair work to the No. 7 ARX-05.
IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship teams return to the track for third practice at 8:30 a.m. ET on Saturday. Qualifying is at 12:10 p.m.
