Porsche leaves LMP1, joins Formula E
Porsche has confirmed it will withdraw from the FIA World Endurance Championship’s LMP1 class at the conclusion of 2017 and switch its motorsport focus to the FIA Formula E Championship
Porsche’s Formula E entry is set to debut for the 2019/2020 season.
Porsche is planning an electric sports car based on the Mission E concept car the marque revealed at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show.
“Entering Formula E and achieving success in this category are the logical outcomes of our Mission E project,” Michael Steiner, Member of the Executive Board of Porsche AG responsible for Research and Development said.
“The growing freedom for in-house technology developments makes Formula E attractive to us.”
Despite the switch, Porsche is not abandoning WEC entirely. They remain committed to the GTE-Pro program in WEC, as well as the GTLM program in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, with the all-new 911 RSR.
Porsche hopes to end their tenure in the LMP1 category on a high.
After winning their third 24 Hours of Le Mans in a row, the German carmaker seeks to defend their 2016 championship title before parting ways with the series.
However, they will not be parting ways with those involved in the LMP1 program. Porsche intends to keep the LMP1 team intact, including the factory drivers, and utilize them in another part of the organization.
