WEC_cota_gal1_9_17_15_12They won Le Mans, triumphed at the recent round at the Nurburgring and now Porsche look set to be the prototype squad to catch at the latest round of the FIA World Endurance Championship at Circuit of The Americas.

In this afternoon’s opening practice session, Porsche went 1-2 with Romain Dumas setting a blistering time of 1m47.231s, quicker than Benoit Treluyer from Audi’s best ever LM P1 lap of  1:47.375 from 2013!

The second Porsche with Mark Webber behind the wheel backed up Dumas with a 1:47.514 lap. The next closest car was more than 1.5 seconds adrift with Audi’s Lucas di Grassi only able to get down a 1:49.027.

WEC_cota_gal1_9_17_15_14Le Mans winner KCMG topped the times in LM P2 – just outpacing the two American entries from Extreme Speed Motorsports. In their most competitive FIA WEC outing to date, the Florida-based squad was second and third with Johannes van Overbeek setting the pace for the team aboard their Honda-powered Ligier.

In the GT ranks it was Ferrari to the fore in the GTE-Pro class. James Calado topped the times for the No.71 AF Corse entry after Toni Vilander’s No.51 car stopped on course.

Vilander’s time was still good enough to be second fastest.

In the GTE-Am ranks Patrick Long set the pace aboard the Dempsey Proton Porsche he is sharing with Patrick Dempsey and Marco Seefried.

FIA WEC teams will be back on track tonight for night practice from 8:00pm.
