Porsche confirm 2016 return
Fresh from taking the clean sweep of championships in the TUDOR United SportsCar Championship and scoring an overall win at Petit Le Mans, Porsche has confirmed it will return for a factory assault in North America in 2016.
The German manufacturer will do battle in the new IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship in 2016 against Corvette, BMW, Ferrari and newcomer Ford.
Porsche clinched the team’s, manufacturer’s and driver’s championship in 2015 with Patrick Pilet starring aboard the No.911 Porsche taking four victories with Nick Tandy.
“The USA is the most important sports car market for Porsche,” says Porsche Head of Motorsport Dr. Frank-Steffen Walliser (pictured right).
“We take on the challenge of defending the titles we won this year in the 2016 season and continue to trust the excellent work done by our race team Porsche North America.”
Pilet and Tandy led a GTLM class 1-2 at Petit Le Mans where both the Porsche and BMW’s John Edwards, Lucas Luhr and Jens Klingmann defeated the faster and more powerful prototype entries.
In 2016, the GTLM cars will feature more horsepower and more downforce. Ford, Ferrari and BMW will debut new cars while Corvette and Porsche will do battle with updated 2015 entries.
