Porsche, Coke and Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta: A perfect blend

September 17, 2019

In the 1980s, the Bob Akin Motor Racing Porsche 935 and 962 adorned with Coca-Cola signage and livery became an IMSA classic.

The classic returns to conclude IMSA’s 50th anniversary season at Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta. Porsche GT Team will pay tribute to the Coca-Cola cars with both factory 911 RSRs adorned in the throwback livery.

Either of the No. 911 or 912 cars will claim the WeatherTech Championship GT Le Mans driver’s championship. Porsche will clinch the manufacturer’s championship by starting the race.

Atlanta-based Porsche and Coca-Cola all worked together to close Atlanta down for a filming day. The formal unveil occurred today.

“The anniversary season for IMSA comes to an end with a big highlight. It’s fantastic that two such strong brands like Porsche and Coca-Cola are working together,” said Pascal Zurlinden, director, Porsche Motorsport.

“We definitely want to continue our shared success story that began in the 1980s. It would be a dream come true if we could secure the title with a top result. This is especially considering that it will be the last race outing for this version of the Porsche 911 RSR in the IMSA series.”

This Coca-Cola livery is the latest Porsche retro or special livery to appear on a 911 RSR over the last two years (all photos by Michelin North America, except all four cars at 2019 Le Mans scrutineering, photo by Porsche).

Sometimes retro Porsche liveries have even made it onto another brand. The Hotchkis Racing Wynn’s 962 that raced in the 1980s has been prevalent with the Riley Motorsports car. It’s been on the full-season Mercedes-AMG GT3 in IMSA, with a variant of it on the Ford GT at the 2019 24 Hours of Le Mans.
