Porsche 911 GT3 RS runs sub-seven minute lap at Nürburgring

Porsche continues to set fast laps around the world with either its race cars or its road cars.

Not long after Porsche’s unrestricted LMP1 car, the Porsche 919 Hybrid Evo, set an unofficial lap record at Spa-Francorchamps, Porsche’s new 911 GT3 RS laid down its fastest lap yet at the full Nürburgring Nordschleife.

Kevin Estre, one of Porsche’s factory drivers, ran a 6:56.4 lap at the full circuit (20.6 kilometers, 12.8 miles). The new 911 GT3 RS follows Porsche’s 918 Spyder and 911 GT2 RS in setting a sub-seven-minute lap at the track. This version has 520 hp and completed the track some 24 seconds faster than the previous generation GT3 RS.

“This lap was a sensational experience for me”, Estre said. “Through the fast corners and on the brakes in particular, the GT3 RS is unbelievably close to our racing car GT3 R. This is also thanks to the new generation of tyres for road going sports cars.”

Estre shared the car with Porsche development driver Lars Kern. Estre has raced off-and-on in the U.S. and his primary drive this year will be in the FIA World Endurance Championship, in one of Porsche GT Team’s 911 RSRs.

The car ran on Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R tires, which have approved fitments for Porsche’s 911 GT3 RS and 911 GT2 RS models. The car’s combined fuel consumption was listed at 12.8 l/100 km; CO2emissions 291 g/km.
