Pole stars shine in Canada

July 21, 2012

Klaus Graf and Muscle Milk Pickett Racing stormed to another pole position at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park today – the German celebrating his birthday with the fastest time of the day.

However, the pole wasn’t without drama. Graf had a scary “moment” early in the session on the lightning fast 2.459 mile circuit – the fastest circuit on the American Le Mans Series calendar.

He quickly settled back into his rhythm and finished 2.15 seconds faster than the Dyson Racing entry of Chris Dyson.

In P2, Martin Plowman and Conquest Racing scored their first ever American Le Mans Series pole.  The diminutive Brit stopped the clocks at 1:08.853 aboard the Morgan P2 car he’ll share with David Heinemeier Hansson.

In the PC class the Grand Prix of Mosport has a another first time pole winner with Colin Braun taking the top spot for CORE autosport.  Braun and teammate/team owner Jon Bennett have won the past two races in the American Le Mans Series and look in good shape for tomorrow. CORE actually qualified 1-3 with local hero Kyle Marcelli splitting the championship leaders.

Corvette Racing’s Jan Magnussen smashed the existing lap record as well as last year’s pole time to score the pole in GT. Magnussen won here at Mosport last season with Oliver Gavin and will now be looking to continue his winning run in the American Le Mans Series.  The Dane has won in every year of the championship since its inception in 1999..

Magnussen will drive with Spaniard Antonio Garcia tomorrow. Corvette Racing actually took a 1-2 result in qualifying with BMW’s Bill Auberlen in 3rd and Extreme Speed Motorsport’s Johannes van Overbeek celebrating his 100th race with a top four qualifying performance.
