Refueling and changing drivers are part of any road trip. This sequence of a BMW Team RLL pit stop at Road America shows just how quickly drivers Lucas Luhr (Orange helmet) and John Edwards (Blue helmet) complete their part of a pit stop.
The BMW Team RLL crew is poised on the pit wall as Edwards brings the No. 24 BMW Z4 GTE to a stop in the prescribed pit box. Stationed at the far end of the pit, Luhr leaps from the wall and reaches the back of the car before the rest of the crew gains their positions.
Luhr reaches the driver’s door to begin the driver exchange with Edwards as the crew prepares to engage the air jacks, fuel vent, refueling hose and begin tire changes.
With air jacks connected, the car is raised and tire changes begin. Edwards has released his belts and radio connections as Luhr helps him exit the car.
With Edwards out, Luhr jumps into the seat while Edwards prepares to assist him with the belts and radio connections while tire changes and refueling continue. The scoring position shown on the door has changed from fifth to third place as other cars now pit. From start to finish, the driver change will have taken approximately 17 seconds.
