piquet_session_1A young Brazilian named Nelson Piquet took his first Formula 1 victory on the streets of Long Beach here in 1980. 35 years later the son of the man who went on to win three Formula 1 World Championships will honor that victory by wearing his father’s helmet design today.

Nelson Piquet Jr kicked off his Long Beach ePrix assault in fine form by topping the first first practice session in the debut race for the the FIA Formula E championship on the famous Californian streets.

Long Beach has been home to major open wheel racing including Formula 1, CART, Champ Car and IndyCar over the past 40 years and now the cars of the future – the all-electric FIA Formula E Championship will race here today for the first time.

Piquet Jr’s China Racing entry was fastest this morning at 59.733 seconds, one of only two drivers along with another famous Brazilian dynasty member – Bruno Senna – to break the one minute barrier.

After five different drivers have taking wins in the opening five races in the championship – Piquet is hoping to make it six from six.

The opening practice session was halted six minutes from time following a red flag caused by Daniel Abt hitting the wall on the exit of the first chicane.
