Peugeot win Petit Le Mans
The Peugeot combo of Stephane Sarrazin, Alex Wurz and Frank Montagny pulled off a dominant five-lap victory to clinch the third consecutive Petit Le Mans victory for the French manufacturer at Road Atlanta today.
After both manufacturers lost a car with mechanical problems, the Peugeot victory was confirmed after Romain Dumas suffered a heavy crash after contact with a GT car while attempting a move on Sarrazin for the lead.
Second place went the Sebring-winning privateer ORECA Peugeot of Nicolas Lapiere, Marc Gene and Nic Minassian while recent Laguna Seca ALMS winners Aston Martin Racing took third with Adrian Fernandez, Stefan Mucke and Harold Primat.
Class victories went to Level 5 Motorsport (LMP2), PR1 Mathiasen Motorsport (LMPC), AF Corse (GT) and Black Swan Racing (GTC).
Remarkable late race action included Flying Lizard Porsche driver Joerg Bergmeister grabbing the GT tire championship for Michelin with an outside pass for second over BMW and contact between CORE autosport’s Ryan Dalziel and ALMS LMP1 co-champion Chris Dyson which eliminated Dalziel and elevated Genoa Racing’s Eric Lux to co-championship status with CORE’s Gunnar Jeannette and Ricardo Gonzalez.
Remarkably after nine races, the three drivers each had 2 x wins, 2 x second place, 2 x thirds, 2 x fourths and single fifth place – all three unable to be split on a countback.
Michelin Alley will have more news, audio, video and image gallery updates shortly direct from Road Atlanta.
