P2 title leader Franchitti on pole
Recent Canadian Tire Motorsport Park P2 winner Marino Franchitti continued his strong form at Road America today by scoring pole today at the Elkhart Lake circuit.
The Level 5 Motorsport racer recorded a fastest time of 1:54.806 with a handy advantage of 0.816 of a second over Extreme Speed Motorsports’ Guy Cosmo.
The performance from the Scotsman was impressive considering the car’s electric dash failed aboard his HPD machine during the qualifying run.
“Our competition was here testing Wednesday or Tuesday. So we were a bit behind when we arrived,” Franchitti said.
“But the engineering staff stayed really late last night. They came up with some genius for us. I lost the dash for the whole qualifying, so I lost the predictor and had no idea how fast I was going, so I just drove as hard as I could and it was good for pole.
“The car was a bit more dialed in, and I couldn’t get a clear lap in practice. The way the schedule is, we focused really on race setup and not on qualifying, so I think that might be the big jump from practice to qualifying. And yesterday you saw the PCs were close to the GT cars, but not today.
“The temperature also created a lot more down force today which made the cars go faster.”
Franchitti will drive with Mexican former ALMS PC class champion Ricardo Gonzalez this weekend. The team’s second car was third fastest with Simon Pagenaud taking the wheel of the HPD he’ll share with team owner, Scott Tucker.
