No Slowing BMWs
The early stages of the GT qualifying session at Mid-Ohio saw more numbers at the top of the board than a bingo board gone wild. But after nearly a dozen changes, the top of the chart had a familiar look as the BMWs of Joey Hand 1:20.539 and Dirk Werner 1:20.655 claimed the front row here at the home track for BMW Team RLL.
Risi Ferrari’s Jaime Melo claimed third at 1:20.745, followed by Joerg Bergmeister in the Flying Lizard Porsche at 1:20.917.
Corvette’s Oliver Gavin qualified fifth, followed by Guy Cosmo in the #02 Extreme Speed Ferrari and #01 with Johannes van Overbeek. They were followed by Corvette’s Tommy Milner, Falken’s Bryan Sellers and Robertson Racing’s Anthony Lazzaro.
Hand, Bryan Sellers, Werner, Gavin, Melo, and Cosmo all topped the board in the first few laps, in some cases for just a few seconds until the next car before Hand moved to the top for good and was soon joined by Werner.
Qualifying 1-2 while carrying new smaller air restrictors assigned to slow them suggests that the BMWs have held some speed in their pockets or on the shelves through the first four races of the season. BMW’s Joey Hand spoke to Michelin Alley after qualifying – click below to listen:
