Nissan DeltaWing on the pace

October 16, 2012

They first doubted it would turn, then they doubted it would be fast, but even the hardest core Nissan DeltaWing sceptic would certainly be raising an eyebrow after yesteday’s testing performance at Road Atlanta.

Driven by Gunnar Jeannette and Lucas Ordoñez,the unique car which features Michelin front tires which are only four inches wide was fifth fastest overall – just .44 of a second off the Level 5 Motorsport P2 car.

The team recorded a fastest time of 1 minute, 13.462 seconds yesterday.

In fact, after the unclassified car qualified towards the back of the P2 pack at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, most were expecting the same at Road Atlanta. However, after testing yesterday, the Nissan DeltaWing was actually faster than four of the five P2 cars on track.

The car also showed impressive speed in the early morning wet weather testing. So impressive, Gunnar Jeannette is actually hoping for a rainy day on race day.

“The testing early this week has given me the chance to try the car in traffic for the first time which has been very beneficial,” Jeannette said.

“We made a lot of improvements to the car on Sunday and Monday and I was incredibly impressed with the car in wet conditions – probably the best car I have ever driven in the wet.

“If it actually rained on race day, I really wouldn’t be too upset.

“The performance of the Michelin tires in damp conditions was really impressive.”
