On Tuesday, the ABB FIA Formula E Championship has revealed digital images of its futuristic next generation car, dubbed Gen2.

The Gen2 car will debut in season five, 2018-’19. Formula E will formally launch the physical car at the Geneva Motor Show on March 6. Manufacturers have worked with the FIA to create a common package of specification parts to house their own bespoke powertrain.

Thanks to technology advancements, teams will not need to swap cars in season five. The new car has almost double the energy storage capacity, and double the range of the existing car. This showcases the battery and electric motor technology advancements made over four years.

Formula E is set to run its new car for the next three seasons, until 2021. Last season, Michelin announced its extension in the series through 2021.

“This car represents the future of racing,” said Alejandro Agag, Formula E Founder & CEO. “When we started Formula E, our goal was to break the mould and challenge the status quo – bringing a revolution to motorsport.

“This next generation car represents that revolution. The cars will be faster and will have almost double the amount of energy storage capacity and double the range, demonstrating the continuous evolution of battery technology. Together with the FIA, we’ve achieved a great milestone with the introduction of this car and I can’t wait to see it on track.”

FIA President Jean Todt added, “I’m very proud that the FIA has been at the forefront of this car’s development. It’s something new for the Federation, and the project has been a huge success.”

Formula E has the fourth round of its season this weekend in Santiago, Chile. It kicks off a three-race South America or Latin America swing, with further races at Mexico and Uruguay scheduled in March. Felix Rosenqvist leads the championship on the strength of back-to-back wins.
