Nasr, Derani seek another Whelen win at Road America
The lineup of Felipe Nasr and Pipo Derani is regarded as one of the top ones in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship.
With three races to go in the DPi season, this weekend’s IMSA Road Race Showcase (Sunday, 2:30 p.m. EDT, NBC Sports App and 6 p.m. EDT, NBCSN) is an important one for the pair to reclaim momentum.

Nasr, Derani and Eric Curran won the Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring back in March in their No. 31 Whelen Engineering Racing Cadillac DPi-V.R.
They’ve been consistent but have only had one podium finish (second at Belle Isle Park in Detroit) since that Sebring win. Either way, they are only three points behind championship leaders Juan Pablo Montoya and Dane Cameron. The team remains in pursuit of both the full season and Michelin Endurance Cup championships in DPi.
Road America has been a happy hunting ground for Whelen Engineering, Action Express Racing and Derani the last several years.
The Whelen team won here back-to-back in 2015 and 2016 with Curran and Dane Cameron (IMSA 50th anniversary Episode 19 here). In 2016, that win came as a precursor to their championship season.
Derani won here in a Nissan DPi in 2017. Last year, Nasr and Curran made it to the podium in third place.
So the two are hungry and motivated to return Cadillac, Whelen and Action Express to the top this weekend.
“We had a great fight forward to get on the podium last year at Road America and hopefully we can be back up there this weekend,” Nasr said.
“I always knew that the track was cool to drive. But last year I learned how awesome the fans are there! It is a really special place. We need to make the most of every one of these races. Our team is working really well right now and we are really focused.”
Derani added, “We’ve got just three races to go this season so they are all critical. Racing at Road America is always so cool, and think driving the Whelen Cadillac there will be a blast. Hopefully, we’ve got good speed and can have a good result this weekend.”
