Mueller leads Ford 1-2 at Road America

August 5, 2017

After three practice sessions where three different manufacturers topped the timesheets, it was Ford that emerged on top in qualifying, scoring a 1-2 at Road America.

Dirk Mueller in the No. 66 Ford GT will lead the charge for the American marque tomorrow, setting a time of 2:01.422.

The time was not only good enough for pole position for the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship race at Road America, but also a new qualifying lap record for GTLM at Road America. The previous record, held by Porsche’s Earl Bamber, was a 2:02.384.

“After the bad luck of the last few races, it was time to turn it around,” said Müller.

“Joey (Hand) and I knew what we had to do and I don’t think we’ve made any changes to the car since we got here. That’s the strength of this team.

“This team is digging in every day and putting in a lot of effort and this was the payback for them. Taking the front row is absolutely brilliant. I’m still shaking.”

Mueller’s time was also more than seven-tenths quicker than his Chip Ganassi Racing teammate Ryan Briscoe. Briscoe will start the sister No. 67 Ford GT second.

BMW’s Alexander Sims will start third in the No. 25 M6 GTLM, ahead of Gianmaria Bruni in the No. 912 Porsche 911 RSR.

Their teammates, Martin Tomczyk and Patrick Pilet, will fill out row three in the No. 24 BMW and No. 911 Porsche, respectively.

The final row of the GTLM grid is all Corvette, with Oliver Gavin in the No. 4 C7.R besting Jan Magnussen in the championship leading No. 3.

In prototype competition, Ricky Taylor put the No. 10 Wayne Taylor Racing Cadillac DPi on pole by more than a second over the No. 52 Ligier LMP2.

PC pole went to James French in the No. 38 Performance Tech car, continuing the team’s streak of starting all 2017 races from pole position.

In GTD, Jeroen Mul starts on pole in the No. 16 Lamborghini Huracan GT3.
