Monterey – The Final Hour

May 22, 2010

With less than an hour remaining, as the temperatures continue to cool, the battles continue to heat up in the top three classes.

At 7:00 p.m. the temperatures were 50 degrees Fahrenheit ambient, and 61 on track. Those dipped to 48 and 59 respectively by 7:30.

All leading cars except the No. 3 Corvette ZR1 need a final pit stop and are in the process of making them. The top three in GT, the No. 4 Corvette, No. 45 Flying Lizard Porsche and No. 90 BMW all ran in lockstep, covered nearly by a blanket on the track.

Things are close as well in LMP. Both the Highcroft HPD of Marino Franchitti and Dyson Lola Mazda of Guy Smith have completed their final stops. While the Mazda took tires, Franchitti is double-stinting his set of MICHELIN ® Tires and did not need a change on the stop.

With less than 40 minutes remaining, Franchitti’s lead to Smith is 34.765 seconds. In GT, Patrick Long led in advance of his final stop, from the two Rahal Letterman BMWs and the two Corvette ZR1s. Joey Hand took the advantage from Long after Long topped off for fuel only on his last lap, and began the chase.
