Michelin Motorsport Continues and Creates New Contingency Programs for IMSA Season
Michelin Motorsport will be running three contingency programs during the 2022 IMSA campaign. This includes one new program challenging teams to be efficient with tires during races. These programs are listed and described below.
#1: “Michelin PILOT CHALLENGE MOMENT OF THE RACE”
Michelin Motorsport will continue its contingency program exclusively for the MICHELIN Pilot Challenge
competitors, in partnership with IMSA Radio, in 2022 with one winner from each of the following
classes:
- GS
- TCR
For the listed classes, during each race, one driver/team from each GS and TCR class will be designated
as winners of the “Michelin Moment of the Race” as selected by the IMSA Radio team.
The result will be determined by IMSA Radio talent and announced at the conclusion of the race. The
criteria for the award will be based on the judgement IMSA Radio partners to recognize the driver and
team produced a moment that had significant impact on the race and their race finish.
Considerations will be made for:
- On-track race move that impacted the overall finishing position for the team
- Off-track strategy (tires, fuel, driver change, etc.) that positively impacted team finish
The winner of the Moment of the Race designation will not necessarily be the overall race winner.
The award for the Michelin Pilot Challenge Moment of the Race will be one set of MICHELIN
Competition tires, to be awarded for each class at each round.
After receiving the validated result from IMSA, Jackson Motorsports Group (Michelin’s exclusive tire
sales and service provider for IMSA competition) will credit the set of tires on that race weekend’s
invoice.
#2: “Michelin All Hands For The Win”
Michelin Motorsport will continue to offer a full season award to the following classes in 2022:
- GTD PRO
- GTD
- GS
- TCR
- LMP3 (IWSC)
- LMP3 (IPC)
Each class will be eligible, and will be awarded to a single team per class. Teams can win by spending the least amount of time on pit lane, and the program will run through Petit Le Mans at Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta. The official result will be determined by IMSA Timing and Scoring, utilizing the following eligibility:
- Complete 80% or more of the race time in all races
- Ties decided by highest place in Team Points standing
The “Michelin All Hands FTW” award is intended to reward team members for outstanding overall team
performance, required to keep the car racing on track as much as possible. The reward will be DOT-legal
street tires (not exceeding $2,000 MSRP per set of tires), to be allocated to identified individual team
members of the winning class teams.
Tracking for “Michelin All Hands FTW” will be cumulative throughout the 2022 season, based on each
class’s race schedule and designated race time.
IMSA will calculate and validate the results for each class, following the completion of each series race at
Petit Le Mans, and Michelin Motorsport will contact the winners following that race weekend.
An updated communication will be distributed at the end of the season, specifying the method and rules
for prize allocation.
#3: “Michelin Efficient Performance Award”
Michelin Motorsport will launch a new contingency program intended to promote efficient use of tires
during a race. The award will recognize those teams who make best usage of their resources and
continuing the pursuit of sustainability goals in motorsports.
The following classes will be eligible:
- DPi
- LMP2
- GTD PRO
- GTD
- LMP3 (IWSC)
- LMP3 (IPC)
For the listed classes, Michelin will calculate an efficiency score for each car based on number of race
laps completed and number of Michelin slick race tires used in the race. The official result will be
determined by using IMSA Timing and Scoring data (# of laps completed) and the Michelin Motorsports
RFID system (# of tires used). Only championship points awarded races will be calculated towards this
program.
Following are eligibility details:
- Awarded based on the total laps completed and the number of Michelin slick tires used in championship points awarded races
- Calculation of tires used will be only for Michelin slick tires based on RFID data captured during the race.
- Complete 80% or more of the Race laps at time of calculation (mid-year and end of season)
- Ties decided by highest place in Team Points standing
The Michelin Efficient Performance Award will recognize the entrant for the car in each eligible class
with the best efficiency score. Award will be presented twice during the season as follows:
– Mid-year award comprised of $5,000 in tire credit to be used during the 2022 IMSA season.
– The cumulative full season award will be a $10,000 tire credit.
The mid-year tire credits will be presented at the next event after the mid-season point defined below:
ELIGIBLE CLASS | TOTAL RACES | MID SEASON |
DPi | 10 | Through Mid-Ohio |
LMP2 | 6 | Through Mid-Ohio |
LMP3 | 6 | Through Watkins Glen |
GTD PRO | 10 | Through Watkins Glen |
GTD | 10 | Through Detroit Grand Prix |
LMP3 (IPC) | 10 | Through CTMP |
The end of season tire credits are presented at the season-end awards ceremony.
Jackson Motorsports Group (Michelin’s exclusive tire sales and service provider for IMSA competition)
will process the credit.
Tire credits are non-transferable and applicable only for use at IMSA Sanctioned events. Outstanding
balances must be settled prior to use of the credit.
