Michelin at Le Mans

June 14, 2015

_RD15497Michelin is the preeminent tire supplier at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, working with teams and technical partners to produce winning performance in the most demanding arena in auto racing.

Michelin is the choice of 39 of the 55 starters. Every LMP1 and every GTE Pro entry has chosen Michelin as its technical partner.

Michelin ships approximately 7,000 tires to Le Mans in 15 trucks and stores them in a 900 square meter warehouse space adjacent to the paddock. The LMP1 prototypes require 2,500 tires, LMP2 uses 700, and the LM GTE classes account for 800 tires.

Fifty Michelin technicians work on three production lines mounting and balancing tire sets. The staff works in shifts to offer round-the-clock service.

_RD42951Michelin also places 25 technical advisors directly with teams and 15 development engineers who analyze tire performance during the race. The data is then sent to the headquarters in Clermont-Ferrand for future reference.

For key suppliers like Michelin, the 24 Hours of Le Mans does not span 24 hours, or even the week preceding the race. It begins many months ahead. For teams and manufacturers alike, perfectly orchestrated logistics and organization are essential to be among the winners.
