Michelin & IMSA Congratulate Le Mans Podium Finishers
WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. – Two weeks ago, most eyes in the motorsports world were focused on Circuit de la Sarthe and the 24 Hours of Le Mans, where a number of regular competitors in IMSA acquitted themselves quite well in the 83rd 24 Hours of Le Mans.
Ten IMSA drivers came away from Le Mans with podium finishes, and five of them came away as race winners. All of them did so riding on Michelin tires.
Leading the way were Nick Tandy and Earl Bamber, who combined with Formula 1 racer Nico Hulkenberg to take the LM P1 and overall victory in the No. 919 Porsche 919 Hybrid. In the GTE-Pro class, the No. 64 Corvette Racing Chevrolet Corvette C7.R trio of Oliver Gavin, Tommy Milner and Jordan Taylor earned a popular class victory.
This weekend, Tandy and Bamber are racing at Watkins Glen in the GT Le Mans (GTLM) class for Porsche North America, but in different cars this time. Tandy is sharing the No. 911 Porsche 911 RSR with Patrick Pilet, while Bamber is in the team’s No. 912 entry alongside co-driver Joerg Bergmeister.
Gavin and Milner are sharing the same car they drove to victory two weeks ago in France, albeit carrying its familiar TUDOR Championship No. 4. Taylor, meanwhile, is back in his full-time ride in the No. 10 Konica Minolta Corvette DP alongside his brother, Ricky Taylor, and Max Angelelli for Wayne Taylor Racing in the Prototype class.
The No. 64 co-drivers finished two class positions ahead of TUDOR Championship regular Giancarlo Fisichella in the No. 51 AF Corse Ferrari 458 Italia. Fisichella – who is co-driving the GTLM-class No. 62 Risi Competizione Ferrari F458 Italia with Pierre Kaffer – won the 24 Hours of Le Mans last year.
On the GTE-Am podium at Le Mans, Marco Seefried finished second in the No. 77 Dempsey-Proton Racing Porsche 911 RSR with co-drivers Patrick Long and Patrick Dempsey. Seefried is competing this weekend in the TUDOR Championship GT Daytona class as part of a three-driver lineup for Magnus Racing with Andy Lally and John Potter in the No. 44 Flex-Box Porsche 911 GT America.
Taking third in GTE-Am in their Le Mans debut was the No. 62 Scuderia Corsa Ferrari 458 Italia with co-drivers Bill Sweedler, Townsend Bell and Jeff Segal. This weekend, Bell and Sweedler are back in the cockpit of their No. 63 Scuderia Corsa Ferrari 458 Italia in the GT Daytona class in the TUDOR Championship, while Segal is racing the No. 43 Team Sahlen Porsche in the Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge along with Joe Sahlen.
All 10 drivers gathered at Watkins Glen on Friday morning, along with Corvette Racing’s 24 Hours of Le Mans victory trophy, for a photo opportunity to commemorate the occasion.
