Marino wins at favorite track
Marino Franchitti came from two laps down to take his Level 5 Motorsport HPD P2 machine to victory lane at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park today.
Team owner Scott Tucker started the No.551 machine while pole winner Mike Conway was aboard the No.552 Level 5 entry.
Franchitti took over in the second half the race and quickly showed the pace that has put him at the top of the points table in the P2 ALMS championship.
His strong pace combined with clever pit strategy got him back on the lead lap and he made a move around the outside of ESM’s Scott Sharp at the end of Andretti Straight with 26 minutes remaining.
He came under strong pressure from Sharp in traffic was able to hold on for the win. After coming close to victory here in 2009, Franchitti was thrilled to take the track which he classes as one of his favorites.
“I could see Scott in the early part of the stint struggling with the car so I knew what my afternoon held for me,” Franchitti said.
So we were burning the left front tire off the car, but the Level 5 guys in the pits were unbelievable. They put us back in the game. We got lucky with the yellow and closed up, but then we burned the tire up.
“The car was just hanging on and it was close between Scott Sharp and I but I managed to hold on. The days when you win with a car that isn’t the fastest are the most satisfying, that’s for sure. I’ve always said this was my favorite track and to finally get a win here is important to me. So yeah, delighted.”
